ISO 4589-2 fire standard for plastics

ISO 4589-2 is an international fire standard that specifies the method for determining the burning behavior of plastics by measuring the oxygen index. This standard is vital in assessing how plastics will support combustion and under what conditions they may or may not burn.

Test Specimen

Under ISO 4589-2, a plastic sample is subjected to a controlled flame in an atmosphere with varying concentrations of oxygen. The test determines the minimum oxygen concentration in a mixture of oxygen and nitrogen that is required to just sustain combustion of the plastic sample for a specified time.

APPLICATION

COMPLIANCE

Manufacturers of plastic products use ISO 4589-2 to demonstrate compliance with fire safety regulations. Adhering to this standard is essential for the marketing of plastics in many sectors, particularly where fire safety is of utmost concern.
